Over-Coming

Leona

Age 98

Obviously a hospitable woman, yet, as she was limited in her living space, kept apologizing for her inability to comfortably seat us, which upset her more than us. Pictures of her past and present adorned her room which she frequently and proudly referred to during our visit. When asked if there was anything she would like to leave to the next generation, she smiled and said, “I have quite a bit of jewelry. It isn’t real.” Which brought out a smile in all of us, and what a beautiful smile she emitted.

Then, seriously, she said, “Nothing is ever so bad that it can’t be fixed. It is hard when you can’t do everything for yourself, when you were used to doing everything by yourself. I’m very close with my daughter and son, but I miss them. Kids don’t live with their parents anymore when they get older. You have to change your way of living according to where you are.”

Leona spoke of making adjustments which, even at her age, is still difficult to do; yet, she is purposefully looking for the good.
