Your Life = Your Lesson

June

Age 102

As she refers to herself as the “last leaf on the tree”, June likens her longevity to her mother who lived four days shy of her 100th birthday.

Although a teacher by occupation, June profoundly stated, “We each have to make our own life and our own experiences adjusting them to our circumstances. Every person will find their life through their own experiences.”

To learn is very personal, indeed! We can be taught, yet what we actually learn is derived from our own encounters and events. Each person has a life to live. What you were meant to learn is up to you and your participation with the life G-d has given you.

Spanning from the wonder and amazement of Houdini, (whom June’s father brought home during her childhood), through an impressionable encounter with Eleanor Roosevelt as well as the horror and tragedy of Leopold and Loeb, up to today’s events and concerns, June has adjusted and continues to adjust within her circumstances. Lessons learned from the past: “You can’t be too secure.” Lessons learned from the present, she emphasizes: “You can’t be too secure!”

Each of us have been given a unique place and time in history to grow, learn and find the balance between good and evil.

June’s father, a master of magic, taught June the art of ‘sleight of hand’. Amidst her dwelling, colorful props of all shapes and sizes boisterously testify of her ability to elicit grins, smiles, laughter and joy through the mystery and wonder of magic. She is still very active making her own life as she teaches internationally as well as locally. She continues expanding her own knowledge and abilities in the art of magic through books, conferences and especially leadership of what she refers to as a small group of 35,000. Regularly she attends ‘The Brotherhood of Magicians’ meetings. “I like it because it promotes good values among the young, old, disabled and experts. It’s a mixture of everybody and I think that is very important. One finger makes a difference in ‘sleight of hand’. It’s easier to demonstrate in person than through books. Teaching is a very worthwhile trade.”

Graciously she maintains her place as a teacher and, yet, humbly she assumes the position of a student as she claims, “You have to keep educating yourself. If you don’t learn, then you die.”
